So You Think You Can Dance 7/24- Two More Dancers Go Home

Cat looks semi angelic tonight up on her balcony, what with her white dress, halo-like hair, and backlighting. Tonight’s group routine is a futuristic hip-hop, and the standouts are the boys, as usual, and Comfort, who is always good in her home style. Katee also seems pretty good, but not quite standout good. It’s from a new choreographer whose name I didn’t catch because Cat said it quickly and in her little cute British accent. I think it was Dan, Tom, or Dom something. That may be completely wrong. The judges are back tonight, including the few eggs short of a dozen Toni Basil. Although, I will admit, I was wrong about her being an innovator of popping. Touché, Ms. Basil, touché. Nigel urges us all to vote for the president, because it is, you know, more important than America’s Favorite Dancer.

Cat starts out with the results quickly. And, by results, I mean teasing us for 55 minutes before telling us who’s actually going home. Katee is up first, and we get a recap of the Mia contemporary (which I loved), the Tyce Broadway (Which was good for Tyce, alright otherwise), and her solo, which wasn’t as good as it could have been. But, in a surprise to absolutely no one, she’s safe. Will is the next one called out. His safety is a little more questionable. We get his video package too, which lets me relive his awesome James Brown solo and his great hips in the samba. I didn’t love the hip-hop though. Will is in the bottom two guys this week, and I’m not ALL that shocked. I mean, Will is an amazing technical dancer, but he’s never been able to connect to the audience like the other dancers.

We continue the results next with Comfort. Even in her video package she seems defeated. But her solo was really good last night as was her hip-hop with Mark, so at least she’ll go out on a high note (Yes, I am just ignoring the foxtrot, even though I thought it was better than the judges made it out to be). Again, in a surprise to absolutely no one, Comfort is in the bottom two. Mark is up next for the guys, and this is actually really good news since they are not gonna reveal the bottom two boys so early. So is Mark safe? He is! And Mark seems more shocked than I am! His face read as disbelief when Cat said he was safe. He keeps saying “Oh my God” and “What?” Great moment. Honestly, Mark is possibly my favorite dancer in all four seasons.

Chelsie is the next dancer called to the stage. I think Chelsie had the best night of everyone because she rocked both her routines and had her best solo ever. America agreed with me, since Chelsie is safe tonight. Which means Courtney is in the bottom two. But it doesn’t really matter since Comfort is going home. Twitch is up next, and I thought he had one of his best nights too. But I’d say Twitch should probably be the next guy to go home. And he is in the bottom two this week. He kind of breaks down on stage and Cat comforts him. Not to trivialize Twitch or anything, it’s kind of adorable and reinforces everything I love about Cat. And it’s kind of sad to see Twitch, well, sad. As a matter of formality, Joshua and Courtney are called out and told their results, and promptly told that they are safe and in danger, respectively.

Digression: I really hope they get rid of this type of elimination. I felt really bad for Courtney when she found out she was part of the bottom two offstage. And then I felt even worse when they left her to sit alone, knowing her results, as they finished all the other business.

Tonight’s World Of Dance segment features a Pas De Deux from the LA Ballet Company. It’s as elegant, restrained, and beautiful as I expect ballet to be. The female dancer’s movements on point are incredible, and makes me wonder how Rayven might have done if she made it farther in the competition. I have to say, however, this seems quite different than Katee and Will’s Pas De Deux

Digression 2: So, I know this is kind of conspiracy theory-ish and is a topic that I’m guessing has already been discussed to no end, but, regarding the SYTYCD Pas De Deux, does anyone else find it a little suspicious that on the week they had the two biggest names they’ve ever had, the two best dancers get paired together and manage to get those choreographers’ dance? I mean, I wouldn’t have wanted any two other dancers to get it, but do you really believe that the show would have risked Comfort and Twitch getting that Pas De Deux?

Solo Time
Comfort-
This is possibly the most energy Comfort has ever had, and that’s saying something. Her movement could have been a little more diversified, but overall, it’s as fun as all of Comfort’s most recent solos, meaning a lot of fun.

Will- Will’s solo is, well, nowhere near as impressive as it should have been. It’s all smooth, and there are a few absolutely beautiful movements, but overall, it could have been so much better. It was just slow, a little anemic even. Just could have been better.

Courtney- Courtney is a sexy little ball of energy on stage. Her dancing isn’t as notable as the energy of it, but it all looks pretty good. Another good solo from Courtney.

Twitch- Twitch is fun, funky, retro and awesome. If this is his end of the road, then it’s a great way to go out. And there’s no one that touches Twitch’s musicality in this competition.

Tonight’s musical guest is LL Cool J. There’s a whole group of video girls dancing on stage, but they’re kind of in the background not doing anything worthy of close-ups or extended camera time (besides when they surround the rappers and gyrate and open their legs). The song is kind of meh. It’s pretty non-offensive, both musically and thematically. The energy seems really low during the performance to me too. The audience seems pretty into it though. I’d give it a B- overall.

We come back for results time. The girls are up first, and is anyone actually unsure what these results are gonna be? It’s Comfort. Everyone, including Comfort, knew that was coming. So she takes it well. She gets a second video montage, and, comically, her first elimination is included in it. Next up are the boys, and this one is much closer. The guy going home tonight is Will, which I’m alright with. I mean, don’t get me wrong, Will is an absolutely amazing dancer. He will go on to great, great things. But he was not my favorite and he was Mark’s biggest competitor (since they were both Contemporary), so, yeah, I’m OK with it. I’ll miss being wowed by his constant amazingness, but it’s a loss I’m willing to take. (And no, all those uses of the word “will” are not intended as puns). The group all huddles tight and gives a big old hug. Aww, it’s cute. What about you, readers? Are you OK with tonight’s results?

So You Think You Can Dance 7/23- The Top 8 Perform

Cat looks cute and natural in a long-sleeved dress. It’s a little cat-burglary but I’ll take it. And yes, that was minor pun intended. The standout intro dancers are Twitch, Mark, and Joshua. I honestly don’t think a girl stands a chance this year, unless Katee is a lot more popular than I think. I just noticed that Cat’s back is bedazzled with big clear stones. That’d be points off, Cat. The special judge tonight is Toni Basil, as in “Oh Mickey, You’re So Fine, You’re So Fine You Blow My Mind, Hey Mickey” Toni Basil.

Courtney and Will- They’ve got a Jean-Marc and France Samba first. Will seems worried, but I highly doubt that he will have any problems. They seemed to have doubts pre-dance about Will’s hips, but I can tell you that they are just as ridiculously good as the rest of him. I’ve seen him be incredibler, but he’s still really good. And Courtney is be able to keep up with him, so respect to her. The only thing I might fault them for is that there seems to be a little lack of connection. Nigel thinks tonight is gonna be a great night. He says that it was great if you don’t count the technique. He thinks their chemistry was good though. Mary thinks she’s being punk’d, because contemporary dancers are dancing salsa really well. That’s kind of the point of the show, Mary. She also cites Will’s lack of technique and loved their chemistry. Courtney’s hips get a scream. Toni had so much fun she forgot she was judging. I’m not gonna lie, she seems kind of like a crazy woman. That may just be me, though. Toni liked it.

Comfort- Comfort started dancing on the streetz. She doesn’t say it with a z, but I think it’s what she intended. Her solo is actually really fun, and, again, I guess she’s going out on a high note. It’s definitely one of her better solos.

Katee and Twitch- They knew each other before the show, so they’re really excited to be dancing together. They’ve got a Mia Michaels contemporary, so I’m already excited. It’s about a crazy girlfriend, which sounds like a good Mia theme. It takes them quite a while to get into the dancing, especially with that extended and real-looking kiss, but once the dancing starts, it’s really awesome. It’s one of Mia’s fun pieces, and the movement is really entertaining to watch. They’ve got great chemistry, and the whole thing is just fun to watch. There’s one great moment in the middle involving Katee swinging on a door. The dance is pretty much banoodles. Cat is all cute with Twitch. Nigel thinks the performance was fantastic. Nigel makes an awkward joke about imprisoning women. He thinks it was absolutely fantastic and they danced it brilliantly and calls it one of the most entertaining routines the show has ever had. Mary is shrill but loved it too. She liked the abusiveness, and calls it brilliant. Toni thinks they were lucky, especially Twitch, and jumps sentences in the middle of one. I’m starting to think maybe she’s just drunk?

Will- Will started dancing because of Dirty Dancing. No seriously. Then Debbie Allen found him and made him amazingly ridiculous. Will is dressed like James Brown for his solo. No, seriously. But that only makes it more amazing. I mean, he should have started the dancing earlier, but its fun, funky, and, most importantly, full of personality. Will is a serious contender now, folks.

Comfort and Mark- Ok, seriously? Mark SERIOUSLY had to get Comfort? No offense to Comfort fans, but he needed a strong partner this week. And he didn’t get one. They’ve got a hip-hop first, but it’s a Napoleon and Tabitha hip-hop, so it’s questionable whether it will be any good. But, yay, because it’s arguably Napoleon and Tabitha’s hardest piece yet, and also one of their very best. Comfort is the star of the piece, rocking it out hardcore, but Mark definitely manages to hold his own too, but that may also be because he’s back in his character comfort zone. But he rocks it too. Nigel thinks it’s remarkable how much better Comfort is in choreographed pieces, because she was great here. But he thinks its remarkabler how good Mark was. Mary thinks they did a great job, especially with their synchronization. She thinks Comfort was hitting it and was surprised by how Mark nailed it. Toni loved it and lectures on ears and streetz (again, not sure about the z). She kind of reminds me of Renny from Big Brother. She sums it up with love though.

Katee- Katee started dancing because she walked on tiptoes a lot. I don’t know, I’m not particularly impressed by this solo. It seemed like her just kind of flailing herself around the stage. Maybe I just didn’t get it though.

Chelsie and Joshua- Their first dance tonight is an Argentine Tango choreographed by Dmitry the Shirtless Wonder from season 2. The more I see from Chelsie in these video packages, the more I like her. She’s really good in this. I’m not sure about the dance, there’s something that’s not fully there for me, but Chelsie really rocks it. Joshua seems more like a prop for most of the dance. When he has to do stuff, he’s good, but most of the time it seems like he’s more there for Chelsie to swing on. Nigel thinks they had the most technical work to do and that Chelsie’s legs are fantastic. He thinks the choreography was good and that it accentuated their strengths. Mary thinks it translated it just the right way and puts them on the Hot Tamale train. Toni thinks Argentine Tango is the most street (no Z this time) ballroom. She thinks it was spontaneous and torrid and then repeats the word spontaneous and torrid. She says the whole dance came together.

Mark- Mark started dancing in musical theater, and his awesome style comes from his being different. He’s not as cool and awesome as he has been, but he’s still cool and awesome. There’s a bunch of those great little arm movements, and two or so really cool leaps.

Courtney and Will 2- They’ve got Napoleon and Tabitha’s other hip-hop routine, and it’s a slow one. Based on the Napoleon and Tabitha law of averages, this should suck. But who knows, because these two dancers could pull it out. But the Napoleon and Tabitha law of averages strikes again, as it’s, well, average. Will and Courtney try their hardest, and there’s a bunch of really cool moments. But the emotion isn’t quite there, and overall, I don’t think it’s gonna be very memorable. Nigel thinks that it was great and emotional. He thought there was a great emotional connection. Mary thinks that these two are tremendous dancers but they didn’t meet her expectations. They blew her expectations away. Oh, Mary! Maybe I missed something on this one. Toni Basil was apparently one of the first poppers. Of pills? I find it hard to believe that “Oh Mickey” Toni Basil was a hip-hoper/popper and one of the founders of the style to boot. She’s pleased that hip-hop is finally getting recognition, since apparently she’s been in cryostasis since 1983. Well, that would explain her abnormally taut skin.

Chelsie- Chelsie started dancing because she was shy and wanted friends. She’s gotten over that shyness now. Chelsie highlights her sexiness and her legs, and does a lot of twirls. It’s one of the better ballroom solos I’ve seen. It’s Chelsie’s birthday, and she’s turning 19, which makes me upset because she’s younger than me.

Katee and Twitch 2-They’ve got a Tyce broadway, which should counter their awesome first routine. Since I’ve been impressed by Tyce I think a total of twice between all 4 seasons, I don’t have high hopes. It’s about Katee wanting Twitch and Twitch not wanting Katee. It starts out decently enough, but then it goes into a really fast section, and the dancers seems to lost all their performance in order to keep up with the steps. The fact that they managed to get all the steps is impressive, and overall, it’s probably one of Tyce’s stronger routines. But it’s not one of the night’s best. Nigel loved the routine and thinks its great that it could actually be on Broadway. But there have been much more Broadway Broadway numbers, so I’m confused. He especially lavishes praise on Twitch and he has never not enjoyed Katee. Mary declines a fake out and screams that it was terrific. Mary can’t remember a better night for the show. Toni thinks Twitch brings more realism than Broadway dancers and thinks Katee had a small personality problem and wanted her to be rougher. But she thinks they did wonderfully.

Joshua- Josh started dancing because a teacher really liked him. His solo is more restrained than usual, but there’s a large number of cool moves, so I’m not gonna complain.

Courtney- She started dancing because she got put into dance classes a young age. Yeah, no story here. She looks beautiful and her movement is interesting. There seems to almost be a story to it. I’d say it was one of the stronger female solos of the season.

Twitch- He didn’t start dancing seriously until his senior year of high school. His solo is, as expected, really cool. Twitch’s musicality is so strong, that he’s always entertaining to watch, because he’s always gonna do something interesting with the music.

Comfort and Mark 2- They’ve got a Jean Marc and France foxtrot. It’s gonna be a jazzy foxtrot, and Jean Marc promises it won’t be easy. Comfort is worried. Ruh Roh. It is a little jazzy and it’s kinda entertaining to watch, but Mark seems stiff and uncomfortable for a decent chunk of the dance. Comfort is actually somewhat impressive, but I may just not be catching the technical problems. They connect pretty well though. Nigel thinks it wasn’t good and didn’t feel the chemistry and calls it amateurish. Mary didn’t like it either and she didn’t feel any love towards the technique. It’s not good. Toni is aggravated by bad turning technique and thinks Mark was better. Everyone brings the hip-hop back up to induce warm and fuzzy memories.

Chelsie and Joshua 2- They’ve got a Doriana Sanchez disco routine. I don’t have high hopes, because Disco’s never great on the show. At least, never that I remember. There’s a bunch of big lifts in it. They both look the part great, to a creepy extent. The lifts all look great, but there’s something that’s not AS impressive when they’re on their feet. It’s maybe a little sluggish. That may also be because my tv signal is really jumpy. But this is definitely one of the best disco routines on the show. Certainly one of the most believable. Nigel thinks Josh’s strength opened a lot of doors for them but thinks Chelsie has a lot of courage to do the lifts. He says they both carried it off really well. Mary thinks it was really good and was impressed by the lifts. Toni thinks they had the spirit of disco (bad music and cocaine?) and thinks Chelsie had the lines (I guess that’d be the cocaine part).

My Rankings For the Routines:
1) Twitch and Katee’s Contemporary
2) Comfort and Mark’s Hip-Hop
3) Courtney and Will’s Samba
4) Chelsie and Joshua’s Disco
5) Chelsie and Joshua’s Argetnine Tango
6) Twitch and Katee’s Broadway
7) Courtney and Will’s Hip-Hop
8) Comfort and Mark’s Foxtrot

My Rankings For The Dancers Overall:
1) Chelsie
2) Twitch
3) Courtney
4) Katee
5) Comfort
6) Mark
7) Will
8) Joshua

In Trouble:
Mark, Will or Twitch, Comfort, and Courtney. No one was really bad tonight, but I’m just hoping Mark survives. But I’m very worried.

Oh, and Joshua wasn’t bad. He was just the eighth best in a very good group of 8.

Last Comic Standing: Who I'm Rooting For

So, I've been watching this season of Last Comic Standing. I'm not entirely sure why, since the most talented comedian never wins and one of the least talented usually does (cough cough Dat Phan). But now that we're down to the final 8 and I've gotten a sense of their comedic styles, here's my rundown, from least favorite to my favorite by far:

8) Ron G- This was really close with seven, and if Papa CJ hadn't just been eliminated, Ron G wouldn't have been on the bottom. But since he's never made me laugh and never proved to me why everyone's treating him like a big shot, he's on the bottom of the list. Oh, and being a sourpuss when having to face God's Pottery didn't help his cause.

7) Adam Hunter- Again, this is a comedian who I haven't really seen anything from. He's never really made me laugh either. So he places low on the list too.

6) Jim Tavare- I like his schtick, and I think he had the single best line in the prop challenge ("This is my stepladder. It's not my real ladder"). But I didn't think his "Yo Mama" jokes were THAT good.

5) Jeff Dye- This is where this list starts getting harder, since I really like all the comedians from this point on. Sure, he's young, but Jeff Dye is funny. His movie spoofs all worked well, and his Vegas bit about gym equipment was hilarious.

4) TIE- Marcus and Louis Ramey- I think that both these guys are absolutely hilarious. They’ve both slayed me with certain bits (Marcus’ Willy Wonka bit in particular). I haven’t fully connected to either of them yet though, but I recognize that these are two funny dudes.

2) Sean Cullen- I’m not normally a fan of those bombastic sorts of comics who deliver everything loudly to compensate for weaker material. But, the thing is, Sean Cullen’s material is very, very funny. He had the best line of the Yo Mama challenge when he discussed now eliminated comedian Esther Ku’s mother’s Korean-ness by citing that she has a north, south, and demilitarized zone on her body. It’s a lot funnier than I’m making it sound.

1) Iliza Shlesinger- I’m a little surprised that Iliza, the only girl, is my favorite. I’ll admit it, I have less faith in female comedians in general, because there are so few of them who slay me (I’m not sexist though, its just what happens). Iliza, however, slays me constantly. Not only are her general demeanor and personality are funny, but her jokes rock my socks off. Particularly, her bit about the women of Rock of Love who define themselves as “intelligent and classy” and, well, there hasn’t been a bit of hers that I haven’t found funny. She just dominates. And that’s why she’s won the past two showdowns that her competitors threw her into. I’m really rooting for Iliza.

Any of you readers watch Last Comic Standing? Who are your favorites?

The Mole 7/21- The Loved Ones Visit

Previously on The Mole, the Players missed home, Nicole was the last girl left, and the players all did really good on one mission and sucked on the other. Oh, and my mole suspect got executed. Frickin’ A. I’m guessing Craig is the mole now. Which means he’s probably going home tonight. Mark is relieved that Alex is gone. Nicole hopes she knows who the mole is. I think everyone does, Nicole.

Jon welcomes them to their next mission, where they have to divide into the smart kids, Mark, Clay, and Paul and the dumb ones, Craig and Nicole. It’s a big scavenger hunt with riddles that lead to a numeric combination. But there’s no writing down answers, so every number must be remembered. Mark is nervous at the pairing of Nicole and Craig, especially since, as the dumb kids, they have to remember more numbers. The smart kids seem to be having more math trouble, which is bad since their math is harder. Clay is especially bad. But Craig and Nicole seem to be kind of crushing it. Craig seems to be sabotaging somewhat, which makes me hopeful that I’m right this time. Paul may also be sabotaging in the reading of directions, putting them far away from their final destination. Nicole also jumps in on the sabotaging, possibly screwing up on the last counting for their team. The teams both finish their counts and return to enter their answers. But one of the dumb teams answers is wrong. So Nicole is given 20 minutes to go back and recount it. Nicole realizes it was one number lower, but meanwhile Clay is looking for codes. Nicole gets back in time with her number, but Clay has found a code and enters his number. And it turns out he’s right. So the team adds $30 grand into the pot, putting the total up to $281,000. Mark has no idea which mole was at work, since there were like 4.

Back at the hotel, Clay and Mark are strategizing. Mark is still solid and they decide that it’s down to Nicole and Craig. Mark is especially leaning towards Nicole. But it turns out Clay doesn’t trust Mark. And meets with Nicole behind his back, suggesting Craig or Mark as the mole. I guess no one suspects Paul. Clay and Nicole decide on Mark it seems. Dun dun duh.

The next morning, everyone leaves Mendoza for Buenos Aires and everyone is starting to miss their families a lot. They all meet Jon at a swanky club and learn they could earn $50,000. Everyone has to pick who they trust the most. Craig and Mark trust Clay, Clay trusts Nicole, and Paul and Nicole trust Mark. Although Nicole really trusts Clay. Jon says everyone’s families are on their way, on trains. But whether they add money or get to see their families depends on the player they trust the most. Craig and Clay are up first. Clay has to answer questions about Craig’s friend, after learning answers from Craig. If Clay gets 3 out of 5 right, Craig’s friend gets to visit. If he doesn’t, the train keeps moving. Clay seems to maybe botch his answers, but we go to a break before we find out if he succeeded.

But, it seems that Clay did in fact succeed, since Craig’s friend Brendi gets to get off the train and ten grand is added to the pot. Clay and Nicole are up next. Nicole seems to know the answers really well. Which is why Clay’s wife gets off her train and adds ten grand to the pot. Mark and Nicole are up next. Mark seems to be dawdling in asking the questions, but it doesn’t seem to matter, since Nicole’s mom gets off the train too. Clay and Mark are up next, and Mark needs Clay to win this for him. Clay draws a blank on one, meaning Clay needed 3 of the other four. But Clay was successful and Mark is reunited with his emotional wife. Although she’s knocked up, so she gets to be emotional. Paul is the last one up, and he doesn’t seem to have answers for a bunch of the questions. Meaning he doesn’t know basic facts about his wife. We go to commercial before we find out if Mark pulled out a win for him.

Sidenote: All the Sprint Instinct ads suck. Hardcore. I mean, who wouldn’t want a phone used by bad robbers, crazy women, and serial killers?

We come back and Paul is freaking out. But Mark manages to pull out the win for him. Meaning the team added $50,000 to the pot as well. Meaning the grand total is up to $331,000. Everyone agrees no one would have sabotaged that mission. Everyone relaxes with their families, but Nicole is feeling beat down by the game. And Paul. Nicole even suggests quitting the game. Her mom seems to cheer her on in terms of quitting. Wow, her mom is really supportive. Nicole seems to be planning to throw the quiz. Everyone goes to the quiz dinner with Jon and their families. The families all profess their belief to their loved ones molieness. I can really see where Nicole gets her personality.

Quiz Time
I suspect Craig
Nicole is still throwing the quiz and has a bad explanation of why
Craig suspects Nicole
Paul is suspicious of Clay’s mission success
Mark is between Craig and Nicole
Clay is not changing his strategy of guessing wrong people

Jon welcomes everyone and their family to the seventh execution. There’s a tie, which means someone was as bad as Nicole throwing the quiz. Ouch. Paul is up first and he’s safe. Nicole is up next, and her throwing it failed, since she’s safe. I’m guessing she didn’t actually throw it. Clay’s strategy of picking the wrong person continues, since he’s executed. Clay is excited to be able to go home with his wife. Paul tries to be nice. Mark is actually nice. Next time on The Mole, everyone walks the plank, gets locked in a cell, and shoots each other.
